Pharmacy Chains in the Philippines Compared: Mercury Drug, Watsons, Southstar, Rose, TGP and the Regional Chains

Pharmacy Chains in the Philippines Compared: Mercury Drug, Watsons, Southstar, Rose, TGP and the Regional Chains

Quick Answer: Six chains account for most of the Philippines' drugstore counters: Mercury Drug (1,200+ stores), The Generics Pharmacy (2,100+), Watsons (1,166), Southstar (716), Rose Pharmacy (400+) and the regional chains. Here is how they differ on coverage, stock, price, hours and delivery.

Six chains run most of the drugstore counters in the Philippines, and they are not interchangeable. Mercury Drug has the widest prescription stock and the most 24-hour branches; The Generics Pharmacy has the most outlets and the lowest generic prices; Watsons leads in malls and health-and-beauty; Southstar and Rose Pharmacy, both Robinsons Retail, dominate Bicol and the Visayas and Mindanao respectively; and regional chains such as St Joseph Drug, Threesixty and Negros Grace are often the only chain in their towns. This guide compares them on coverage, stock, price, hours and delivery. Branch listings are in the pharmacy directory; for how to find and check any pharmacy, see our pharmacy near me guide.

Which chain for what?

  • A specific branded prescription, or anything unusual: Mercury Drug first. Its stock depth is why doctors' offices say "available at Mercury" as shorthand.
  • Maintenance medicines on a budget: The Generics Pharmacy or Generika, then compare with the generic on Mercury's or Watsons' shelf. Price differences on a month of antihypertensives can be several hundred pesos.
  • Late night: Mercury's 24-hour list, then hospital pharmacies.
  • Vitamins, skincare and over-the-counter: Watsons, with the loyalty card.
  • Provincial Visayas and Mindanao: Rose Pharmacy and the regional chains, which also extend credit to regular customers in ways the national chains do not.
  • Free medicines under PhilHealth YAKAP: whichever nearby branch is an accredited GAMOT pharmacy; the signage is on the door and the pharmacist validates the prescription code. See our YAKAP guide.

What is the same everywhere?

The law. Every branch must hold an FDA License to Operate and display it, must have a registered pharmacist on duty to dispense prescription medicines (Philippine Pharmacy Act, Republic Act 10918), must offer generic alternatives with prices (Generics Act, Republic Act 6675), must give senior citizens and persons with disability their 20% discount and VAT exemption, and must stock only FDA-registered products. A chain name is not a substitute for checking: search the branch on the FDA Verification Portal, as our guide to checking FDA licences shows.

What about independents and government outlets?

Thousands of independent drugstores fill the gaps between chains, and in many barangays they are closer than any chain; the same licence and pharmacist rules apply. Botika ng Barangay outlets and rural health unit dispensaries sell a short list of essential generics at cost. For where they fit in the system, read what a rural health unit offers for free, and browse drugstores alongside pharmacies in the directory.

Frequently asked questions

Which is the biggest pharmacy chain in the Philippines?
By store count, The Generics Pharmacy with more than 2,100 franchised outlets. By sales and prescription range, Mercury Drug with more than 1,200 company-owned stores and, by its own account, the largest share of pharmaceutical retail. Watsons follows with 1,166 stores at the end of 2024, Southstar Drug with 716 and Rose Pharmacy with more than 400.
Which chain is cheapest?
For generics, The Generics Pharmacy and Generika, whose model is low-cost generics under their own labels. Mercury Drug and Watsons stock branded and generic lines at list prices with loyalty discounts; Southstar and Rose sit between. For any specific medicine, ask the pharmacist for the generic options and prices, which the Generics Act requires them to give.
Which chains deliver?
Mercury Drug (its own app and call-and-deliver), Watsons (app and website), Southstar (call and pick-up, delivery), Rose Pharmacy (call and pick) and The Generics Pharmacy (online store) all deliver in the cities they serve, and all are on the main delivery platforms. Prescription medicines still need a prescription uploaded or shown at delivery.
Which chains are open 24 hours?
Mercury Drug has the most 24-hour branches and marks them in its store locator; Watsons, Southstar and Rose keep selected city and hospital-area branches open around the clock. Regional chains rarely do; the hospital pharmacy is the fallback.
Do the chains accept PhilHealth YAKAP prescriptions?
Accredited GAMOT pharmacies do, and PhilHealth is accrediting branches of the large chains and independents alike; look for the YAKAP GAMOT signage at the branch. The pharmacist validates the prescription code from the GAMOT app against your ID and dispenses free within your ₱20,000 annual allowance.
What are the strong regional chains?
St Joseph Drug in northern Luzon; Threesixty Pharmacy in Rizal and eastern Metro Manila; Negros Grace Pharmacy in Negros and the Visayas; Rose Pharmacy across the Visayas and Mindanao; Southstar in Bicol; and Generika, a franchised generics chain nationwide. In many provincial towns one of these is the only chain present.
